The first commercial passenger flights out of the Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia could be lifting off by fall.

Iberia Parish officials broke ground Thursday on a new 1,200-square-foot passenger terminal, a key component in a plan to offer round-trip flights to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston for oil and gas business trips.

Evidently, conversations within the team charged with designing the proposed I-49 Connector got serious over the holidays. Based on statements at a Jan. 26 presentation to the Connector's Community Working Group, the DOTD and their partners have seen the light when it comes to the public and institutional resistance they've faced since re-opening the near 30-year-old project to design last October.

Since it launched its planning campaign in October, the state Department of Transportation and Development has had to pause and rethink how it introduces the Interstate 49 South plan back into a community that looks much different than it did nearly 20 years ago.

Louisiana's new secretary of economic development has launched an 11-stop tour of the state with a single purpose in mind: boosting local economies around Louisiana.

Secretary Don Pierson was in Lafayette on Tuesday to assure business and community leaders that LED will continue building on partnerships it has forged with business and community leaders in landing such prized companies as CGI and Bell Helicopters.

The state Department of Transportation and Development is extending the timeline for input on the proposed Interstate 49 Connector through Lafayette, in part to consider changes in the community in the years since plans for the road were last subject to public scrutiny.

DOTD in September launched an 18-month public outreach effort focused on such issues as the location of parks underneath the interstate, landscaping, pedestrian and bike paths, lighting and aesthetic design themes for the road.

LAFAYETTE – One Acadiana (1A) has hired a remarkable leader to direct the development and execution of 1A’s government relations strategy, including advocacy efforts, lobbying activities, and coalition building.
