Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana names Chief Medical Officer

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has named Dr. Vindell Washington as chief medical officer.

Washington most recently served as national coordinator for health care information technology in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He was also president of the medical group at the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System in Baton Rouge for more than seven years, overseeing 500 medical providers and 1,400 employees. Washington also served as vice president of performance excellence and technology and chief medical information officer there.

Washington, an emergency medicine physician, has served as CEO of Piedmont Emergency Medicine Associates, a large private group in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He received his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He also has a master of science degree in health care management from the Harvard School of Public Health.
