As Lafayette Parish families send their children back to school, many are in hybrid learning or strictly online for the first time causing many questions and technical issues, but the Lafayette Parish School System and Love Our Schools has come up with a solution to help.
Lafayette school leaders say it was important to find a way for kids to start learning again.
“When they came back to school on September 8th, it has been 179 days since they stepped foot on campus,” said Jennifer Gardener LPSS CAO. "That is an entire school year of days that they’ve missed.”
This time with more virtual learning they knew they would have problems that needed solutions.
“How can we help the school system stay on their feet through this pandemic and even prosper?” said Ryan Domengeaux, Schumacher Family Foundation.
That’s why LPSS and Love Our Schools Link and Learn created a 24-hour help desk to help kids and parents keep connected and it’s been busy.
“In the four days since we’ve been live with the help desk we have fielded 900/800 tickets,” said Domengeaux. “142 online and phone was about 800 tickets. Ninety-five percent of those tickets have been closed. That means people came to us with a problem and we gave them a solution￼.”
For those answering the calls, they say parents are grateful.
“It’s just an overwhelming relief that there is somebody that there a human person and they can talk to you and get advice from,” said Nanette Meaux, Help Desk Manager.
That help desk is employed by LPSS school employees currently in the system.

The online access will be available 24/7 for assisting with questions related to internet connectivity and device usage.
