With U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy present, the completion of Interstate 49 was touted as one of the state’s top infrastructure priorities at meeting hosted by One Acadiana, a nine-parish chamber of commerce.

Gregg Gothreaux, Lafayette Economic Development Authority president and CEO, said, “You are talking about the most important project we can do in the history of the community, second probably to creating the university, maybe.”

The state faces a $487 million shortfall in its current budget and there is no single solution to the problem, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne said Friday at a meeting hosted by One Acadiana at the Picard Center.

In addition, a $1.9 billion deficit is projected for the next fiscal year. Dardenne will become commissioner of administration as John Bel Edwards is sworn into office as governor Monday.

Louisiana’s fiscal state is much worse than calculated last year when lawmakers adopted Gov. Bobby Jindal’s budget.

“We all agree that the numbers are accurate,” Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne told business officials Thursday at the Picard Center. “This is reality.”

Lafayette native André Breaux has returned home to direct One Acadiana’s policy initiatives.

Breaux spent the past two years with the office of Mayor Kevin Johnson in Sacramento, Calif., as a policy adviser and special projects coordinator. He supported Johnson on major initiatives, including his national leadership as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and his local leadership on downtown development and community-police relations.

One Acadiana has hired Lafayette native André Breaux to be the economic development agency’s director of policy initiatives.

Breaux will lead the agency’s team in developing and advancing policies on transportation infrastructure, pre-K education and workforce development, One Acadiana President Jason El Koubi said Tuesday.

An engine doesn’t go without pistons. You don’t see them, but they’re essential for momentum.

The Interstate 49 Connector through Lafayette will either be the best economic spark the city has seen in decades or the biggest mistake since the Evangeline Thruway cut the city in half.

Monday marks the close of a voter-approved one-cent sales tax to build a new terminal at Lafayette Regional Airport.
