One Acadiana has expressed its strong support for a tax renewal for the Lafayette Parish School System.

The 7.27 millage renewal will be on the ballot Saturday. It has been in place for more than 40 years, and generates about $14 million each year for the district.

After 61 of its members returned from a trip to research fellow southern city Charleston, South Carolina, regional chamber One Acadiana is touting its political support from political hopefuls.

On Monday, One Acadiana officials held a press conference to announce that all four “major” gubernatorial candidates and others running in state and local races have expressed support for all or portions of the organization’s “Priorities for a Better Acadiana” initiative.

The four major contenders for governor and 31 legislative candidates in the region are backing all or some of the economic development group One Acadiana’s regional priorities, the organization announced Monday.

This week, approximately 60 Acadiana business and civic leaders traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, to meet with their counterparts on One Acadiana’s inaugural Leadership Exchange trip. We returned home inspired by Charleston’s capacity to address challenges and pursue opportunities similar to those in our nine-parish Acadiana region and other metro areas across Louisiana. We have an immediate opportunity to apply one of the lessons of that trip by voting “yes” on Constitutional Amendment No. 2.

Tears streaming down his face,  Lafayette Consolidated Government councilman Kenneth Boudreaux openly grieved at the altar of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

On Tuesday, day two of the One Acadiana Leadership Exchange to the city, Boudreaux and others visited the church where, on June 17, a gunman with extreme racist views walked in on an evening Bible study and shot 10 people, killing nine.
