Louisiana voters returned to the polls Saturday, June 27, to settle the runoffs in the U.S. Senate primaries, the only contest on the ballot across most of the state.
On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow defeated State Treasurer John Fleming, winning roughly 57 percent of the vote. On the Democratic side, Jamie Davis won his party’s nomination by a wide margin, taking about 80 percent of the vote over Gary Crockett.
Letlow and Davis will now face one another in the November 3 general election. The seat is currently held by two-term Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who finished third in the May 16 primary and did not advance to the runoff.
The November 3 ballot will carry more than the Senate race. Louisiana’s U.S. House elections, postponed earlier this year, will be decided this fall under the state’s newly adopted congressional map, with candidate qualifying in early August and an open primary on November 3. Because the new map redraws district lines, some voters may find themselves in a different district. Voters will also decide 10 proposed constitutional amendments, the most on a single ballot since 2014.
