In Lafayette, global technology firm will create 400 new jobs and increase employment to 800

LAFAYETTE, La. — Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards and CGI executive Dave Henderson announced the company will launch a significant expansion of its Lafayette IT Center of Excellence and create 400 new direct jobs, with CGI employment rising to 800 over the coming years at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Research Park, and at a second Lafayette Parish site to be determined. Statewide, CGI’s employment will reach 900.

As policymakers, funding organizations and citizen volunteer groups grapple with trying to prevent another disaster like the 2016 flood that engulfed Acadiana and much of south Louisiana, a new phrase has taken hold: water knows no boundaries.

In other words, replacing parochial, parish-by-parish flood-control initiatives with a regional approach to watershed management is now seen as critical to sustainability.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s newest research center is poised to become one of the state’s preeminent centers for interdisciplinary research and education of watershed-scale solutions for flood risk management and water resources sustainability.

Placed under the Institute for Coastal and Water Research’s canopy, the Louisiana Watershed Flood Center will operate through an interdisciplinary nexus to study watersheds, or the land that drains into a body of water such as a river, lake, stream or bay.
